Brief History of the Company

Charles Abercrombie, better known in Danville, Virginia as, “Mr. Charlie” founded Abercrombie Oil Company in September of 1956. In the beginning, the company was a Phillips 66 gasoline distributor serving four local stations. The home office was a gas station across from the fire station on Bridge Street.

In 1958, the company entered the home heating market and moved into a facility on River Street. Eleven years later the company began a pattern of growth through mergers and acquisitions by acquiring the area Cities Service distributorship along with its current facility on West Main Street. Business combinations with Burch Oil in Martinsville, Cobb Oil in Ruffin, North Carolina, and Rich Petroleum and Willis Oil in Danville greatly expanded the size of the company and established Abercrombie Oil Company in the growing LP Gas market. By the end of the 1980’s, Abercrombie Oil represented both Exxon and Citgo as a distributor serving both Virginia and North Carolina.

The 1990’s saw further expansion in bulk delivery operations through acquisitions of Mason Oil in Gretna, Virginia and Hite Oil in Martinsville, Virginia. A dramatic increase in retail gasoline operations occurred in 1993 with the acquisition of most of the assets of “U-Fill-‘Er-Up, Inc.” based in Greensboro, North Carolina. The “U-Fill-‘Er-Up” combination virtually doubled the size of Abercrombie Oil Company and dramatically increased the business in North Carolina.

Currently, Abercrombie Oil and its subsidiary companies generate close to 60 million gallons of sales of gasoline, distillate fuels, LP gas, and motor oil. The consolidated company represents Exxon, Citgo, BP, and Pennzoil through distributor relationships, is a Pacific Pride franchisee and offers its own proprietary brand called “Daytona”. Service is provided to over 6,000 residential and commercial bulk delivery customers from Abercrombie’s bulk plants. The company supplies over 120 retail gasoline locations in Virginia and North Carolina must of whom are delivered by the company’s transportation fleet.

The growth of Abercrombie Oil over the years has been directed by Milo Abercrombie, the president and principal shareholder of Abercrombie Oil Company, Incorporated. Milo is the nephew of the founder and a long time resident of Danville, Virginia. His leadership has grown the company from a small four- station distributorship into an ever-expanding, diversified company employing roughly 80 full and part-time employees.
